Daily Bible Reading: Luke 10

[25] One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” [26] Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?” [27] The man answered, “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” [28] “Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!” Luke 10:25-28 NLT
This interaction is the introduction to Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan. It includes several points that are worthy of consideration.
First, we have the question asked of Jesus, “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” Clearly the question of eternal life was important to this man, but I wonder how important that question is to people today. Is our attention so drawn to the material things of the world in which we live that we never consider the future? How often do you think about this?
Second, this includes the two greatest commandments, love God and love your neighbor. There are people who focus on one of these and ignore the other. That is misguided. The commandments instruct us to love God and people, not love God or people.
Third, Jesus said, “Do this.” He did not say, “Know this.” Followers of Jesus are not to merely know the commandments. They are to actively incorporate them into their lives. What daily actions grow out of your love for God? What daily actions grow out of you love for people?
