Read 1 Kings 18 today.

This chapter includes the contest between Elijah and the prophets of Baal and Asherah on Mount Carmel. The question was not related to which prophets was more powerful, but rather whether or not the god each prophet served was real. Faith in a powerless god, or a god of our own making is foolishness. Elijah was making this very clear.
Elijah’s other point is to actually follow the god who is real, to choose actions consistent with that reality. An atheist is one who does not believe God exists. A ‘practical atheist’ is one who states he/she believes in God, but whose actions are inconsistent with such belief. Elijah’s challenge was not merely to the prophets of the false gods, but to the people. He challenged them to see the real God, and faithfully follow Him in real and recognizable ways.
The challenge for us remains the same. Have you recognized the living God in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ? Do your actions reflect such a belief?
1 Kings 18:20-21 NLT
So Ahab summoned all the people of Israel and the prophets to Mount Carmel. [21] Then Elijah stood in front of them and said, “How much longer will you waver, hobbling between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him! But if Baal is God, then follow him!” But the people were completely silent.
