Read 1 Kings 2 today.

This chapter concludes the transfer of the throne from David to Solomon. Considering David is referred to as, “a man after God’s own heart,” some of the requests he made of Solomon seem a little surprising. Solomon takes other actions in order to consolidate his power. The author neither condones nor condemns the actions of either of these kings.
Reading this chapter reminds us of the reality of political power and the extent to which people will go to acquire and keep it. Mean spirited desire for political power is not a new thing, nor is it found only in those with whom we disagree. Strong conviction that my position is right does not justify meanness on my part.
