Read John 11 today.

John 11:45-48 NLT[45] Many of the people who were with Mary believed in Jesus when they saw this happen. [46] But some went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. [47] Then the leading priests and Pharisees called the high council together. “What are we going to do?” they asked each other. “This man certainly performs many miraculous signs. [48] If we allow him to go on like this, soon everyone will believe in him. Then the Roman army will come and destroy both our Temple and our nation.”
The words and actions of the high council are indicative of what they really believed. When confronted with the question about whether God is more powerful than Rome, their answer is clear – even God cannot stand in the face of Roman might.
When we are confronted by the powers of this world, what do we believe? One of the messages of Christmas is that God has chosen to overcome the power of sin and death with grace and love. God permits other powers to be exercised for a time, because we also have free will. But ultimately, God’s grace and love will prevail.
Today, we can exercise our free will. We can choose to not wait to let God’s grace and love prevail in us. We can choose to extend God’s grace and love to the world around us. It depends on what we really believe.
