Proverbs 4:20-27 NLT
[20] My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. [21] Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, [22] for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body. [23] Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
[24] Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech. [25] Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you.
[26] Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path. [27] Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.
Proverbs is a book about wisdom, which is contrasted with knowledge. It seems to me that knowledge is neutral, but the use of knowledge may be positive or negative, good or evil. Good use of knowledge is wisdom.
One of the challenges we face throughout life is the draw away from the path which is best for us and those around us. It is almost like a powerful magnet pulling us in the wrong direction. How many times have we seen people with amazing potential become sidetracked by unwise decisions or actions?
Verse 23 reminds us to “guard your heart.” When I think of the meaning of guard, I think of something that is constant, something that is continuously maintained. There is recognition of an ever present threat. Every day we face numerous choices, numerous opportunities to stay on the path of wisdom or become sidetracked.
Guard your heart.
